Amethyst can vary in colour from bands of pale, almost colourless lilac to the deepest royal purple, formed by complex crystal lattice substitutions. It may display small inclusions created by the presence of various transition elements.

Amethyst is a form of quartz and is the traditional birthstone for the month of February. It was believed by the Ancient Greeks to protect against intoxication, is revered by Tibetans as sacred to Buddah and was used in the Middle Ages to decorate Royal regalia in England.
